Saturday Commute

Today was one of those rare Saturdays that we had something going on at work that I had to be there for a few hours, so I decided to bite the bullet and just hack and cough my way to the office by bike.  It was literally the first time I’ve ridden in a couple of weeks, and in spite of the bronchitis, it was nice to get back in the saddle.

Being a Saturday morning, there was absolutely no traffic on my route, especially on the way in.  I think I was only passed by one or two cars the entire way.  The trip home was almost as quite!  The wind, however, would have been brutal on the way home if it hadn’t been pretty much pushing me the entire way.  For once I managed to get lucky and get it behind me.

Most of the time I’m pretty darn healthy (except maybe for an occasional overuse injury) so when I do come down with something like this bronchitis, it frustrates me to the point of making me angry.  I’m not a very patient patient.  When I get sick, I want to be well immediately!

The good news is that I did go to our company doc on Thursday and she gave me something to try and see if it would knock the cough down.  Apparently with true bronchitis like I’ve got, the cough is self perpetuating because it keeps the lungs inflamed, which in turn causes more coughing.

She also suggested that there was really no reason to stop exercising.   She did suggest cutting back the intensity and duration, but said I would be better off to keep working through it if possible.  She also suggested wearing a muffler or face mask while running or riding in the cold.

Tomorrow is church and a basketball game, and the early forecast for Monday isn’t looking too good, so we’ll see if I can get my normal commutes in this week or not.

God bless…

Hope you get to feeling better soon. I’m not liking the sounds of the forecast for Monday either. I will ride in the bitter cold but I won’t ride on ice or snow, my route is too dangerous. Cars barely give me room when it’s dry. My fear is that I will slip and get run over. Here’s wishing you a speedy recovery.
