Indian Summer

Saturday’s don’t get much better than today!

Pam started her running group this morning, so I went for  a 23 mile ride while she was gone.  When I left the house, it was 57 degrees outside, with promise of mid-70’s later in the day.  I knew the wind would kick up pretty quickly, and it did.  Strangely, I never was able to find a pure tail wind today.  Heading north on the way home was the closest it came.

That wind, combined with five days of running and five days of riding this week left my legs feeling pretty puny the entire time.  Tomorrow is a rest day for sure!

It occurred to me that I’ve never posted a picture of the Pierson Creek or the James River on this blog, so I stopped this morning to grab a shot of both.  The shot above is Pierson Creek and the one below is the James River.    The creek and river valleys play a major role in any ride we take from the house.  We can’t get anywhere without some significant climbing, and going out through them all the time make me a much better climber than most riders I encounter.

As I crossed through those river and creek bottoms this morning, I’ll bet there was a 5-7 degree temperature difference.  It was much cooler down there and I was glad to get back to higher ground where it was warmer.  After crossing the river, I had to stop and wait for the train at Turners….

After climbing out of Turners, I came upon a good sized doe deer ambling across the pasture and road in front of me.  It wouldn’t wait around long enough to get the camera out, but it sure wasn’t in any hurry to leave either.  I watched it for several minutes as it crossed the road and bounded through the pasture with it’s white tail flashing at me.

I really enjoyed myself this morning.  It is rides like today that fuel my passion for cycling.  Nothing beats it!

God bless…
