If the shoe fits…
A couple of years ago, Pam and I bought some really nice matching SIDI Dominator MTB shoes. Unfortunately, from day 1, hers caused foot pain across the outside of her right foot that we couldn’t resolve. Every time she wore them, she ended up with a sore foot. It finally got to the point where the only time she wore them was when it was too cold for her sandals.
We tried tweaking the cleat position many times over those two years, but it wasn’t until we took a running class that we finally figured out what the problem might be. She kept saying that she thought the shoe was flexing, but I knew darn well that those shoes are stiff enough that there was no way she was feeling flex. Well, in class last month, we had a discussion of proper foot support for running, and I realized the issue was probably that she had no arch support in those shoes. I suspected she was feeling her arch collapse and her foot roll on some of the hard climbs, which was essentially straining a tendon. When I started thinking in those terms, I could tell that both her shoes and mine had absolutely nothing in terms of arch support.
After a little internet research, I decided if that was the problem that perhaps our best bet might be a pair of Specialized Body Geometry shoes. We went shopping last Saturday, and I’m pleased to report that after her first ride in them, she was pain free! We’ll see what happens over time, but I’m sure encouraged!
And, as Pam says, the red in them matches our tandem!
God bless…

Nice article. I created a video on just this subject. In the video I talk about cycling shoe fit and the importance of support under the foot. Here is the link. Feel free to embed the video if you want.
Thanks
