Registration for Ride the Rockies 2012 has now closed.  I got mine in and expect to find out sometime this week whether I was drawn in the lottery for one of 2,000 slots.   But, you know what?  I’m pretty ambivalent about it.

On one hand, that ride has been on my bucket list for several years now.  It can’t help but be an awesome ride.   On the other hand, however, I absolutely hate that drive home from Colorado.  If I get selected, I’ll have to make that trip alone.  Having just returned from a ski trip out there, my only thoughts about the possibility of going again in June are simply not very enthusiastic.

As a side note, on the way home last Saturday, we drove through a ginormous dust storm.  The above picture was taken about 3:00 in the afternoon on a day that was mostly blue bird skies.  It took us about an hour to drive through it, and while there wasn’t really a lot of dust at road level, everything had a sort of brown tinge and we could smell the dust in the air.  It was pretty interesting to experience.

God bless….

I hope you got in for Ride the Rockies. It is always a great ride. If by chance that you did not, check into Bicycle Tour of Colorado that happens the following week. I have done them both. They are equally challenging. RTR has a more published format with great talks each afternoon. BTC has better food items at each stop. Either way both are a fine way to see the state. There are a few people that ride them both back-to-back. Enjoy your ride.

  2. I think my legs would explode if I tried that ride.

I can totally relate to not loving the drive home from CO, but I also think it’s worth it to ride there. The route for RTR looks great, RMNP is amazing on a bike. The only drawback in my mind is the non-loop nature. Like George wrote, maybe the BTC is an option. Or, you couls always go in August for CRMBT, my personal favorite. Good luck!

You’re a good climber from what I have experienced. I hope some day you can say, “RTR, yeah I did that.”

Regarding the drive to Colorado, I look forward to it since the grandchildren on there, but I hear you on the drive home….
