My new favorite food
Hey, y’all! I’m a reformed man!
I kid you not, for 51 and a half years, I would not touch the stuff. There was something about the pasty texture and the overwhelming taste of peanut butter that I just didn’t care for. I know. It was odd. Everyone loves peanut butter. Everyone grew up eating PBJ sandwiches. Everyone, but me, that is.

LiveStrong Rest Stop
That started to change for me in October, 2011 at the 60ish mile rest stop of the LiveStrong Challenge ride. This rest stop followed a 25 mile slog uphill on the tandem, and I was feeling the need for nourishment. The table on the right had the usual assortment of bananas and cookies that I had eaten at the previous rest stops so I wasn’t particularly interested. For some reason, I grabbed a PBJ from the table on the left. And IT TASTED SO GOOD! I had a second for good measure. Pam couldn’t believe it, and I just attributed it to the fact that I was hungry.
Ride the Rockies Rest Stop
Then, nearly a year later, it happened again on Ride the Rockies. There was a vendor at the third or fourth rest stop every day who was selling PBJ’s made from homemade jellies and jam. Oh, my goodness! That jelly and jam was awesome! I bought one from her every day.
Late last fall I noticed a new product at our local Wally World. The Planters Nut-rition Cinnamon Raisin Granola Mix was something that sounded right up my alley because I love cinnamon and raisins. I grabbed a jar to take on our NYC vacation to eat with bagels, and have gone through about a jar every week since.
I usually eat it on a Cinnamon Raisin Thin Bagel with honey. At about 220 calories total, about a tablespoon of the peanut butter and a drizzle of honey make this a sweet treat that gives me a nice boost of carbs and protein to help me recover from my morning runs and rides. I will also often eat one as an evening snack if I still need to pick up some calories after supper.
I never would have thought it. Me eating peanut butter!
God bless…

I think peanut butter makes a great snack for the bike – I like to do peanut butter and banana wraps to take with me on the bike. I don’t think the UK has evolved it’s peanut butter to the level of a cinammon raisin granola mix yet though!
You should send this post to the Planters people, I bet they’ll send you some free goodies!

The stuff is great. Add some real butter and honey, and its a gourmet snack.
