Another 29’er

Today was one of those days where the temperature hovered at exactly the same place all day!  It was 28 degrees when I rode in, 29 degrees at lunch time, and still 29 degrees when I went home.  Brrr….have I ever said I hate winter.

Even more annoying than the temperature, was the evening darkness.  I guess I’ve gotta get used to it until the winter solstice later this month.  For some reason the darkness and traffic that seemed heavier than normal  had me on edge tonight.  I’m usually pretty comfortable riding in the evening traffic, but tonight was bothersome.

On the way home, I noticed that my rear brake was bottoming out on the handlebar.  I noticed a couple of weeks ago that the pads were pretty shot but I managed to get enough cable back to last a few more rides.

I went down after work, pulled the pads, and replaced them with a set I had laying around from when I was experimenting on the tandem last summer.

It didn’t take long to get them installed and adjusted.

As I was finishing up, I noticed the rim was showing a lot of wear.  Riding in the crud is sure hard on the entire braking system.  I’m  wondering if it’s becoming a self-defeating cycle – rims wearing out the pads, which in turn causes greater wear on the rim.   Or, maybe I’m just over thinking it and worrying about nothing?  What do you think?

Top Posts – Number 4

November 8, 2011

In October of 2009, I posted my fourth most popular entry.  I’m not sure what there was about this post that caused it, but for some reason it showed up at the top of Google’s list when anyone searched for “pug” or “pug dog” for a few weeks.

Just goes to show that it’s good to have Google on your side!

Must popular Posts – Number 5

November 2, 2011

I’ve been considering doing a Top 5 Posts series for a while now.  With the advent of fall weather and it’s shorter days, meaningful blog content is getting a little more scarce so it’s probably as good a time as any to move forward with that plan.

So….I give you My Most Popular Blog Posts – Number 5….from April, 2009.

Back to business

Back to the business at hand.  Normal life.  Normal routine.

But first, get fresh batteries.

Actually, that’s not a bad segue to this morning.  After a week with nothing but a lot of walking, my batteries were recharged and it felt really good to lift weights and ride to work this morning.  I guess that’s what vacations are for!

Dreaming

February 8, 2011

DSC02971

Well, it’s that time of the year.  We’ve had snow on the ground for a week now and temperatures at the low end of my tolerance level for commuting the entire time.  I could have ridden today, but decided at the last minute to go ahead and drive.  We’ve got snow coming again this evening and tomorrow, so what’s a guy to do?

I’ll tell you…dream about the bike trip (or trips) I would like to make this year.  I’ve got at least three options on the table, but at this point no decisions have been made yet.

  • Two of the three have the potential to be kind of expensive.
  • Two of the three involve sleeping in a tent.
  • All three are over eight hours from home.
  • Two of the three would include Pam and the tandem.  I don’t think she would be interested in the other one.
  • One of the three involves a type of riding we’ve never attempted before.
  • One of the three is liable to be the most challenging ride we’ve ever done.

Oh, the decisions to be made.  I think I’ll just sit here and agonize over them for a few more days!

God bless…
