Texas Blows …..

February 28, 2011

Boy, this morning was one of those rare commutes that just wasn’t a lot of fun.

  • Temps hovering just under 40 degrees.
  • Fog
  • Mist
  • A strong north wind of 25-30 mph.
  • Rain for the last mile.
  • Dirt and crud on the road.
  • Mud in the air

Wait a minute!  Mud in the air?  Sure enough.  Take a look at the pictures of my jacket after the jump! (more…)

Family Day on the Trail

February 28, 2011

After watching the Lady Bears complete a sweep of their final home stand of the season yesterday, Libby and Jeremy met us at the South Creek Trail for a late afternoon bike ride.  We experienced an unseasonably warm Sunday afternoon, even if it was pretty darn windy and heavily overcast.

On my way home from the ball game, I had seen several cyclists out on the streets, but I knew the wind was strong enough that a road ride would be a bit of an ordeal.  For our leisurely jaunt up the green-way, however, it didn’t prove to be a problem.  Our late afternoon departure was nearly perfect timing, as there were relatively few people still out at that late hour.

This time of the year, it’s pretty rare that water isn’t flowing over the trail in several places.  You can see from the pictures that Pam was “styling” in her nice green pants.  She had to slow down to “old lady speed” when crossing the wet places to keep from splashing mud on her backside!

Being the speed demon that he is, Jeremy amused himself by practicing his bunny hops over puddles and any little thing he could find for a ramp.  The rest of us were just content to poke along enjoying each other’s company and the afternoon.

By the time we got back to the cars, we could tell that darkness was approaching.  By the time we loaded our bikes and drove the few blocks to Subway for supper, the day had ended.

Hope your weekend was a great one!

God bless…

I think I’m gonna need these tonight!

February 24, 2011

This morning was awesome!  Warm and slightly humid conditions made for a most excellent run and ride to work.  Unfortunately, the rain started just a few minutes after I got settled in at my desk, and it’s looking like the ride home tonight will be pretty soggy.

I’ve used the rain pants a few times, but this will be the jacket’s inaugural soaking!   Based on the weather forecast, I totally expected it.  In fact, I kind of thumbed my nose at the weather just because I had this new jacket!  Sure hope it meets my expectations!

God bless…..

Is it Spring?

February 23, 2011

When I was out working in my yard Monday morning, I noticed that the jonquils are pushing their heads up out of the leaves.  They’ve got nearly three inches of green showing at this point, so I guess it’s inevitable that spring will finally conquer what I’ve felt was a pretty nasty winter around these parts.

Biking home from work last night really felt good.  I could tell just by looking around that people are starting to come out of their winter slumber and get active again.  It was still a little cool at 46 degrees when I left the office, but with lots of daylight left, people were everywhere.  I saw walkers, runners, cyclists, skateboarders, and the couple on push scooters that I’ve not seen in ages.  This is the man (taken a couple of years ago).  I wanted to stop for a fresh picture when I saw them coming, but there was a line of cars behind me so it wasn’t practical.  Maybe I’ll see the two of them out again soon so I can get an updated picture…

The ride into work this morning just felt like spring was on the way.  It had rained while I was lifting weights earliier, so the streets were nice and damp.  I love it that way in the morning…sounds are muted and everything is quiet.  At 36 degrees, the temperature was reasonable, and there was a nice southeasterly wind to push me toward the office.  It was another of those mornings that I wished I had a longer distance to go or time to just go out and play!

It’s amazing to me how commuting to and from work by bike enhances the overall quality of my life.  I get so much enjoyment out of the time that I find it hard to understand why others think I’m odd for doing it!  Oh well, I guess it’s their loss and my gain!

God bless…

See that ugly mug up there?  Notice anything different about him?  I’ll give you a minute to think about it….
