I was off work on Friday playing nursemaid to the one I love. I didn’t expect to be able to get away from the house, so I contented myself with doing a little bike maintenance in the garage and the thought of an afternoon spin bike ride. Just as I was about to change clothes and climb on, she decided she was feeling well enough that I should ride outside instead of indoors. That made my day, especially since the temperature was reading 64 degrees at the time.
It was 3:00 by the time I got away, and I didn’t want to be gone long, so I set off to do the High School loop. By that time, the wind was blowing pretty strongly from the south, re-enforcing the idea that you’re never going to get a really perfect day to ride around here in January.
As I headed east, I found that my butt needed time to reacquaint itself with the saddle of my road bike. I’ve mentioned it before, but that bike is so different from the Surly I that it usually feels pretty foreign to me for the first several miles every time I get on it.
Because I was feeling pressed for time, this was one of those days I just put my head down and focused on keeping a pretty high cadence. Doing so allowed me to keep up a decent pace against the wind without totally wearing myself out and press the pace a little in the crosswind.
I saw a couple of other cyclists out enjoying the day also, and couldn’t help but grin when I kept thinking, “This beats the spin bike any day”!
